Phrarmacy Practice & Clinical Rotation

Pharmacy – Inpatient

The Pharmacy department provides 24-hour/7 day services for all inpatients at St. Mary's Health Center.  Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians staff each shift.  The department is responsible for drug procurement, storage, dispensing and drug information.

Drug procurement is primarily through contracts with a national purchasing group.
Drug distribution utilizes direct copy of physicians order, maintenance of computerized patient profile and medication administration record, unit dose dispensing through interface of patient profile with Pyxis stations, complete IV admixture service - including significant chemotherapy perparation.

Significant clinical activities through direct contact with other health professionals, therapeutic equivalence authorization, drug dosing service, drug interaction and adverse drug reaction monitoring; maintenance of a formulary and drug therapy protocols.  There is active interaction with a Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.  A full time residency trained in Pharm.D. clinical pharmacist is a member of the staff.

Rotation through all professional service functions of the department - length of time developed to meet student educational needs and desires.  Rotations will be with the person responsible for the specific function, ie.: hospital and department orientation, purchasing, order entry, dispensing process, IV admixture, controlled substance process, drug use review, profile maintenance, clinical activities, Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, department administration, and special project(s).

Community – Outpatient

St. Mary's owns and operates outpatient pharmacies in four communities:  Jefferson City, Holts Summit, Tipton, and Westphalia.  These clinic pharmacies are staffed with pharmacists and technicians 10 hours/day, Monday - Friday.
These pharmacies are located in clinic building which also house physician(s) offices.  The pharmacies are medium-volume, offering a full scope of activities - drug procurement, drug storage, drug dispensing and counseling to individual patients, physician contact, as well as dispensing to nursing home patients.  There is a very close working relationship with physicians.

Rotation through all functions of the department - length of time developed to meet student educational needs and desires.  The rotation could be to one site or multiple sites as determined with the preceptor and the student.  Rotation would include:  purchasing, order entry, profile maintenance, dispensing process, patient counseling, physician relations, community relations, insurance issues, nursing home dispensing, clinical pharmacy management, and special project(s).
