Preparing for the Unexpected
A Course on Emergency Childbirth
This program was developed to meet the needs of health care professionals confronted with unexpected, emergent birth, subsequent neonatal care and stabilization in a non-obstetric setting.
Emergency medical transportation professionals, ER nurses, physicians and allied health professionals, especially in a hospital without obstetrics (OB) services would all benefit from the content of this course.
Continuing Education Credits
SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital is an approved provider of continuing EMS education by the state of Missouri Bureau of EMS. This educational offering is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health for 4.0 hours of continuing education.

Course Objectives
- Develop a plan for preparation of equipment and staff for management of a precipitous delivery and the potential for other complications.
- Develop a plan for preparation of equipment and staff for management and care of the newborn delivered in a nonobstetric setting.
